The word “honorable” always makes me think about knights and dames. There’s just something noble and dignified about the word “honor”.
But you don’t have to be a character from Game of Thrones or to have lived in the middle ages to be an honorable person. There are actually plenty of honorable people around today.
In fact, it’s quite possible that you’re an honorable and respected person yourself. Ever think about that?
Let’s take a look at the signs and see…
1) You always keep your promises
Here’s the thing:
A lot of people like to make promises and talk big. They’ll say stuff like, “Don’t worry, I’m gonna sort that out for you!” or “I’ll be there, you can count on me”.
But can you guess what happens afterward?
It’s all talk. I don’t know if they’re doing it because they feel like that’s what they’re supposed to say, if they genuinely mean what they say at that moment and then forget, or if they’re just trying to look good by smiling and making empty promises.
Whatever the reason, there are many people who don’t keep their promises which totally sucks for the people counting on them.
But if you’re not like those people, if you keep your promises and honor your commitments, it’s because you’re an honorable person. You’d never let anyone down on purpose.
If you say you’re going to do something, you can be counted on. And if you say you’ll be somewhere, come rain or come shine, you’re going to show up.
That’s why people respect you, your word really means something.
2) You’re trustworthy
As we’ve already seen, you’re reliable and you always deliver on your promises. But that’s not all!
- You’re also honest, you always tell the truth (well, almost always – you tell white lies to spare people’s feelings), you’re transparent in your actions, and clear about your intentions.
- When it comes to keeping secrets, mom’s the word. Once someone’s told you a secret, you’ll carry it to the grave with you – you won’t even tell your significant other about it. The way you see it, it’s not your secret to share!
- And you’re faithful. You’d never ever betray someone’s trust or cheat on your romantic partner. Even if you’re unhappy in your relationship and you meet someone new you like, you’d never do that. If it really came down to it, you’d have a talk with your partner and break things off before doing anything.
Basically, you’re the kind of person that others feel they can talk to and confide in.
3) You’re respectful and considerate of others
It’s true, you are.
It doesn’t matter what others think and whether someone is popular and well-liked or not, you treat everyone with respect and consideration. It’s how you were brought up.
You were never one to single someone out for being different, in fact, you kind of dig the fact that they’re not like everyone else.
You appreciate diversity, you’re curious about other cultures, and you want to find out about other people’s opinions.
And hey, even if you don’t agree with someone, you still accept and respect their opinion.
In short, no matter what someone’s race, sex, religion, or political views are, and no matter what other people think of them, you always treat them with the respect that all human beings deserve (unless they’re like serial-kserial killersething, obviously).
4) You stand up for what you believe in
The truth is that today, it’s easier than ever for people to be “all talk and no action”.
Take a look at social media for example. People are constantly liking and sharing posts about different causes. They think that just because they took a second to click and share a post about some injustice they’re big activists, saving the world.
But when it comes down to taking to the streets in protest or doing something concrete, they “don’t have the time.”
However, because you’re an honorable person, you actually stand up for what you believe in.
Whether it’s telling the people in your life that they’re wrong to be so prejudiced against immigrants, or marching for women’s rights, you walk the walk.
5) You show compassion and empathy for others
The world would be a much better place if everyone would show a bit more compassion and empathy for others. For both people and animals. Don’t you agree?
I mean, is it that hard to treat others with kindness and understanding? Isn’t that how everyone wants to be treated?
But why am I telling you this?
Being the honorable person that you are, you already show compassion and empathy for your fellow beings.
- If you see someone hungry on the street, you get them something to eat.
- If they’re cold, you go home and get an old jacket or blanket to give them.
- And if an animal is hurt, you bring it home and nurture it to health (despite being told by the people around you that “You’re crazy, you can’t take a pigeon home!”)
Simply put, you hate to see anyone suffer and if you can help in any way, you do.
6) You are humble
Well, of course you are!
Just think how tacky it would be if knights and dames went around bragging about all their achievements!
All jokes aside, you’d actually be embarrassed to boast or bring attention to the fact that you’re successful or really good at something.
The thing is that you’re unpretentious, always ready to learn from others, and you never think of yourself as being better than anyone else.
And guess what – that’s why so many people look up to you and respect you.
7) You’re fair and just
But what does that even mean?
It means that you always try to make decisions based on objective criteria, without showing favoritism.
You make sure to treat everyone fairly and give them equal opportunities, whether it’s in professional scenarios or in personal relationships.
Simply put, you treat everyone with dignity and respect, and you make sure that you give them a chance to prove themselves.
8) You’re not afraid to admit you’re wrong
Nobody’s perfect, we all make mistakes.
And I know that it’s not always easy to admit when you’ve made a mistake, but you do it anyway.
You’re not afraid of looking foolish or getting into trouble, you tell the truth and suffer the consequences.
And the best part?
You look at mistakes as a chance to learn and grow. I think that’s very admirable and wise.
9) You have a strong moral compass
Look, doing the right thing may not always be the popular choice, but you won’t have it any other way.
You always strive to do the right and ethical thing. You won’t be swayed by the desire for personal gain or pressured by external factors to do something that goes against your principles.
The thing about honorable people like you is that you have your values and principles and you do your best to live by them.
10) You’re all about helping others
And unlike some people, you do it because it gives you joy to help or do something nice, not because you’re expecting something in return.
I know so many people that do good deeds because they’re keeping score. I’m serious! It’s like they have a little notebook in which it says “Helped so-and-so move, 10 points for me. They owe!”
Whatever happened to doing something nice just for the sake of it?
If you recognize yourself in the signs I’ve listed in this article, then congratulations, you’re an honorable person.
Just keep doing what you’re doing, you’re on the right path.
